Landing in Nairobi, I was eager to understand the local perception of Kenya’s tech scene. My initial attempts to gauge public opinion on the street, however, proved challenging. “Is Kenya the tech hub of Africa?” I’d ask, only to be met with hesitant glances and hurried responses.
Undeterred, I pressed on, determined to uncover the truth. Two core questions guided my exploration:
- Is Kenya truly the tech hub of Africa?
- How is AI solving the everyday needs of ordinary Kenyans?
The answers, I soon discovered, were more nuanced and inspiring than I initially anticipated.
Airqo and the Power of AI for Clean Air
My journey began at Airqo, a company pioneering innovative solutions for air quality monitoring. Nairobi, like many African cities, grapples with air pollution, and Airqo is on a mission to change that.
“Imagine walking down the street and not knowing the quality of the air you’re breathing,” explained an Airqo representative, holding up a small, portable device. “That’s why we created this.”
This device, an Airqo monitor, continuously measures air quality, providing real-time data on pollution levels. It can be installed in homes, on streets, or even mounted on motorbikes, offering a comprehensive picture of air quality across the city.
“The data collected by these monitors is invaluable,” he continued. “It helps us identify pollution hotspots, understand the impact of traffic and industrial activities, and ultimately, make informed decisions about improving air quality.”
Airqo’s work is not just about data collection. They’ve developed a user-friendly mobile app that allows anyone to access real-time air quality information. This empowers individuals to make informed choices about their daily activities, such as avoiding areas with high pollution levels or opting for alternative transportation.
“We believe that everyone has the right to know the quality of the air they breathe,” he emphasized. “Our goal is to make this information accessible to all, empowering individuals and communities to take action.”
Airqo’s innovative approach has garnered significant attention, including a grant from Google’s Air Impact Challenge. This support has enabled them to expand their operations and deploy more sensors across African cities.
Google’s Vision for Africa: Connecting and Empowering
To gain a deeper understanding of Google’s role in fostering technological advancement in Africa, I met with Matt Brittin, President of Google Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
“Africa is on the cusp of a technological revolution,” Matt declared. “With increasing internet connectivity and the rise of AI, we believe Africa has the potential to leapfrog traditional development models and become a global leader in innovation.”
Google is actively investing in Africa’s digital future. The Equiano subsea cable, a significant infrastructure project connecting Africa to Europe, will significantly improve internet speeds and connectivity across the continent.
Furthermore, Google is committed to empowering Africans with the skills they need to thrive in the digital age. Through initiatives like skills training programs and partnerships with local organizations, they are equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools to participate fully in the digital economy.
AI for Good: Transforming Healthcare and Beyond
One of the most inspiring examples of AI’s impact in Kenya is the work of Jakaranda Health, a health tech company focused on improving maternal health outcomes.
“Over 7,500 Kenyan women die each year during childbirth,” explained a representative from Jakaranda. “This is a preventable tragedy, and we are determined to change that.”
Jakaranda’s innovative platform, “Prompt,” leverages AI-powered SMS communication to connect with pregnant women. Through interactive conversations, the platform gathers crucial information about their health history and risk factors.
“This data helps us identify women who may require additional care and support,” she explained. “We can then provide timely interventions and ensure they receive the necessary care.”
But Jakaranda’s innovation doesn’t stop there. They are developing an AI-powered ultrasound interpretation tool that can assist healthcare providers in rural areas. This technology can help determine the age of the fetus and its position in the womb, enabling more accurate and timely medical decisions.
“By empowering healthcare providers with AI-driven tools,” she emphasized, “we can improve the quality of maternal healthcare and save countless lives.”

Matt Brittin envisions a future where AI becomes an integral part of everyday life in Africa.
“Imagine a world where everyone has access to a powerful AI assistant,” he mused. “A personal assistant that can schedule appointments, organize travel, provide personalized medical advice, and even help you learn new skills.”
He emphasized that AI has the potential to revolutionize various sectors, from healthcare and education to agriculture and renewable energy. By harnessing the power of AI responsibly, Africa can address its most pressing challenges and build a more prosperous and equitable future.
