The U.S.–Mexico border is one of the most discussed, debated, and misunderstood places in the world.
For years, I had heard stories about illegal migration, border walls, drug cartels, tunnels, and the American Dream. But hearing about it from thousands of miles away is very different from standing there in person.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the southern border in Tucson, Arizona, and San Diego, California, to see firsthand how one of the world’s busiest and most heavily monitored borders operates.
What I discovered was far more complex than the headlines.
First Impressions: A Wall Unlike Anything I Had Seen
The first thing that caught my attention was the wall itself.
Stretching across the landscape was a giant steel barrier topped with barbed wire. In some areas, it stood nearly as tall as a three-story building. It wasn’t just a fence marking where one country ends and another begins. It was a physical symbol of one of the biggest challenges facing the United States today.
On one side was Mexico.
On the other hand was the United States.
Separated by only a few meters, yet representing two very different realities for millions of people.
More Than Just a Wall
One thing many people don’t realize is that the wall is only one part of the border security system.
As I moved through different sections of the border, I noticed cameras, surveillance towers, sensors, checkpoints, patrol vehicles, and agents constantly monitoring activity.
The border stretches nearly 2,000 miles from California to Texas, making it impossible to rely on physical barriers alone.
Technology has become just as important as steel and concrete.
Going Behind the Scenes
One of the most valuable parts of this experience was meeting with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and field agents operating on land, in the air, and on the water.
I wanted answers to questions that are rarely discussed beyond political debates and news headlines.
The conversations gave me a deeper understanding of the scale of the operation and the challenges faced by those tasked with securing the border.
I was also given access to some of the technology used to monitor illegal crossings.
Much of what I saw could not be filmed, but the experience reminded me of an airport control tower.
Rows of screens displayed real-time information, movement patterns, surveillance feeds, and activity across vast sections of the border.
It became clear that modern border security is no longer just about walls. It is increasingly driven by technology, intelligence, and coordination.
Why Do People Risk Everything?
One question remained at the center of everything I saw:
Why are so many people willing to risk their lives to come to America?
For millions around the world, the United States represents opportunity, stability, and the possibility of a better future.
As one of the world’s largest economies, America continues to attract people seeking jobs, education, safety, and a chance to improve their lives.
For some, the desire for a better future becomes so powerful that they are willing to cross deserts, rely on smugglers, face extreme weather conditions, and take risks most of us can barely imagine.
Unfortunately, not everyone survives the journey.
The border is not only a place of policy and politics. It is also a place of hope, desperation, and difficult choices.
The Other Side of the Story: Drug Smuggling
Illegal migration is only one challenge at the border.
I also learned about the role criminal organizations play in moving narcotics into the United States.
Drugs such as fentanyl and cocaine continue to be major concerns for law enforcement agencies.
One of the most fascinating—and surprising—aspects of border security is the existence of underground tunnels.
Some tunnels are sophisticated enough to include lighting, ventilation systems, and rail tracks. These tunnels are used to move narcotics beneath the border while avoiding traditional checkpoints and barriers.
It was a reminder that border security involves much more than stopping people from crossing illegally.
A Lesson in Coordination
Perhaps the biggest lesson I took away from this experience was seeing how different agencies work together.
Border security is not handled by one person or one department.
It involves coordination between officers on the ground, aviation units, marine units, intelligence teams, technology specialists, and multiple government agencies working toward the same objective.
Watching that level of coordination was impressive.
As someone coming from Nigeria, it also made me reflect on how inter-agency cooperation can strengthen a country’s ability to address complex security challenges.
Why This Story Matters
The U.S.–Mexico border is often discussed in political terms.
But standing there, I realized it is ultimately a human story.
It is a story about security and opportunity.
About law enforcement and migration.
About hope and risk.
About people searching for a better life and the systems designed to regulate who can enter and who cannot.
The reality is far more complicated than a simple debate.
And that is exactly why understanding it matters.
A Personal Milestone
This experience was also personally meaningful.
Access to operations like these requires multiple layers of approval and trust. It is not something available to every journalist.
I was honored to be one of only 11 journalists selected from around the world to participate in this reporting tour, and the only participant from Nigeria.
