I had the most amazing experience exploring some of the most luxurious neighborhoods in Johannesburg. Sibiya Sibiya from the channel “Let’s Prop In” was my knowledgeable guide, and together, we delved into the top five most opulent estates in and around Johannesburg. From number five all the way to the ultimate pinnacle of luxury living, we uncovered some truly incredible spots.
Serengeti Lifestyle Estate: A Tranquil Haven for the Elite
I visited the Serengeti Lifestyle Estate, which is ranked number five on the list of top estates. It’s located about 15 km from the airport, which is super convenient for quick travels. This place is a total escape from the hustle and bustle of city life – perfect for those seeking a quiet and tranquil lifestyle.
The estate spans 300 hectares and features a conservation area along with Jack Nicklaus’ signature golf course. It’s a dream for anyone who wants to enjoy the finer things in life in a relaxed setting.
The residents here are mostly retirees and families looking for a spacious environment and a great golfing experience. The estate offers top-notch facilities, including a state-of-the-art gym, a pro shop, and a 180-seat restaurant. Plus, they have a nearby Curro School, making it convenient for families.
The lifestyle here is all about dining experiences, golfing, and leisure. If you’re thinking about property prices, they start from $551,000 for a vacant plot and go up to $500,000 for a five-bedroom on 3,000 square meters.
The priciest listing in the estate is a five-bedroom villa priced at just under a million dollars. Keep in mind these are just rough figures I picked up from various online property listing websites, so they might not be entirely accurate.
Eye of Africa Golf Estate: Where Luxury Meets Convenience
The fourth most luxurious neighborhood on our list is the Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate, and let me tell you, it’s quite something. I recently heard from Taylor Davidson, the co-founder of Stoic Realty, who gave me the lowdown on this exclusive estate. It’s a sprawling 800 hectares of mixed-use land, with everything from one-bedroom apartments to grand, luxurious houses. Divided into 17 clusters, the estate boasts lush indigenous grassland and a conservation area.
One of the highlights of the estate is its award-winning Greek Norman design championship golf course. And get this, despite its serene countryside vibe, it’s just 17 kilometers away from Joburg CBD. So, you really get the best of both worlds – peaceful estate living with easy access to the city.
The amenities here are top-notch, with tennis courts, basketball courts, a sauna, gym, two restaurants, a community swimming pool, and of course, the renowned Greg Norman golf course. For nature enthusiasts, there are plenty of hiking trails, walking trails, and mountain bike tracks to explore.
Now, let’s talk real estate. You can invest in freehold stands starting from $64,000, going all the way up to around $900,000 for a six-bedroom home. The crème de la crème of properties is a jaw-dropping 35 million Rand mansion, which happens to be the most expensive house in the estate at the moment. And guess what? It’s up for sale!
I got a tour of another property listed at 30 million Rand, and let me tell you, it’s a stunner. This beauty sits on over 1,000 square meters, with an additional 400 square meters in the garden space. It boasts six bedrooms, 8 and a half bathrooms, two garages that can fit at least four vehicles, a swimming pool, and a gym. Oh, and did I mention it’s a three-level smart home with a wine cellar, cinema, and even a casino? The interior décor is opulent, with a mix of black and gold, giving off a Versace vibe.
Before this, there have been several sales in the range of 18 million to 15 million Rand, so you know this place attracts some serious buyers. So, what do you think of this incredible estate landing at number four on our countdown? Let me know your thoughts!
Waterfall Country Estate: Where Elegance Meets Exclusivity
The third most luxurious neighborhood on the countdown is the Waterfall Country Estate. I just visited the Waterfall Country Estate in Waterfall, and it’s quite an impressive place. The estate is a massive 2,200-hectare development, making it the largest of its kind in southern Africa.
It’s conveniently located about 10 kilometers from Sandton, so you can imagine the kind of people who live there – probably middle to high-income individuals, families, and young professionals. The security in the estate is top-notch, with a massive gate and several entrances, making the residents feel safe and secure.
The estate has everything you could possibly need without having to leave. There are top schools, a Netcare hospital, a clubhouse, a gym, and even a shopping center, all within the estate. The homes there are stunning, with a modern and dynamic architectural style. The prices vary, with two-bedroom homes starting at around 1.5 to 2 million Rand, and standalone four or five-bedroom homes ranging from 15 million to a whopping 68 million Rand. Yes, you read that right – the most expensive listing there is a staggering 68 million Rand!
I even toured one of the properties, which was quoted at 68 million Rand. It’s probably one of the most expensive houses in the area. What do you think of this exclusive gated estate being ranked as the third most luxurious neighborhood in Johannesburg?
Steyn City: A Paradisiacal Retreat for the Elite
Steyn City, located in Johannesburg, South Africa, is known as the second most luxurious gated estate in the area. It’s a highly sought-after location with incredibly luxurious homes and an increasing focus on lifestyle amenities.
Covering a vast 2,000 acres of indigenous parkland, this award-winning estate offers world-class facilities, including a championship golf course designed by Nicholas, a clubhouse, and an education center.
The community at Steyn City is diverse, attracting working professionals, corporate newcomers, and managerial executives from multinational companies. The properties here are truly impressive, with upscale architecture and a wide variety of housing options, from smaller apartments to massive properties.
The all-inclusive lifestyle at Steyn City is a major selling point, offering residential areas, a golf course, nature conservation, and even a school within the estate. Steyn City is renowned for its top-notch security, making it a popular choice for the country’s elite, including millionaires, billionaires, expatriates, and foreigners.
The properties in Steyn City range from more affordable two-bedroom apartments to lavish standalone homes with price tags reaching up to 50 million Rand. The estate offers a mix of freehold and sectional title properties, with prices varying between 30,000 and 45,000 Rand per square meter for sectional title units, and 21,000 to 30,000 Rand per square meter for freehold homes.
As of 2024, over 1,000 residents already call Steyn City home, and it continues to attract those seeking a luxurious lifestyle in a secure and prestigious environment. What are your thoughts on Steyn City as the second most luxurious estate in Johannesburg?
Waterfall Equestrian Estate: The Pinnacle of Luxurious Living
Lastly, I visited the Waterfall Equestrian Estate in Johannesburg, South Africa, and it was truly an experience. As the top estate on our list, this place is like a dream come true for the super-wealthy. The estate is absolutely massive, with stands ranging from 8,000 square meters to 10,000 square meters and about 120 plots in total. The properties here are no joke – they range from 18 million Rand up to a whopping 100 million Rand. That’s some serious luxury!
The architecture and design are on another level. I mean, these properties are like something out of Beverly Hills, with driveways leading into the massive land spaces. It doesn’t even feel like you’re in Africa when you’re here – it’s that breathtaking.
And the best part? The resale value here is through the roof. Some properties have seen returns of up to 15% in just five years. That’s insane! And from a rental perspective, you could be looking at anywhere from 80,000 Rand to 150,000 Rand per month. That’s some serious cash flow right there.
I’ve traveled quite a bit, but I haven’t seen anything quite like the Waterfall Equestrian Estate. It’s truly tailored for the super-wealthy and ranks as my favorite estate in all of Johannesburg. I’d even go as far as to say it’s the best in the top five. It’s just that exclusive and impressive.
I also wanted to check out some other high-end neighborhoods in Johannesburg, like Bedfordview, Sandton, and Houghton Estate but didn’t get the chance. From what I’ve heard, they’re in the same league as the Waterfall Equestrian Estate, with huge properties and hefty price tags.
Have you ever visited a neighborhood that’s comparable to this level of luxury? I’d love to hear about it!
